When a website is going to contain large quantities of details about individual items, it often makes sense to store the details in a database on the web server. Then with some custom programming, those details can be retrieved and placed on the web page automatically. For example, if a business has a large product line that has multiple colors, sizes, and styles to display on a website, storing those details in the database saves hours of hand-editing in web pages.

The real advantage here is that when product details need to be updated, they are entered into the database instead of the individual product web pages. No additional work needs to be done on the web pages themselves to support those product updates.

In addition, a web-based database can be accessed for updates by any computer that has a compatible web browser (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.).

I have created a number of these "data-oriented" websites for clients as well as for my own business. The software I use to create the client access program comes with its own administrative and user access scheme, so more than one person can manage the site, and everything is password-protected. Thus, the business owner can make changes anytime, and remain in control of their website.
